Overview of defined benefit type corporate pension (as of the end of March, 2014)

The overview of corporate pension (Defined Benefit type) on the trust bank industry, the life insurance industry and Zenkyoren (the National Mutual Insurance Federation of Agriculture) as of the end of March, 2014 (tentative) has been compiled below.

[ Summary ]

    Among the number of defined benefit type corporate pension, trustee institutes undertook 531 employees' pension funds and 14,278 defined benefit pension plans.
  • 2.
    Asset balance of defined benefit type corporate pension was 84.54 trillion yen with an increase of 5.62 trillion yen (up 7.1% y/y).

    Of the total, employees' pension fund was 30.93 trillion yen (up 7.1% y/y), and defined benefit pension plan was 53.61 trillion yen (up 7.2% y/y).

    By industry, 68.74 trillion yen (81.3% of the total) are from the trust bank industry, 15.38 trillion yen (18.2%) are from the life insurance industry and 0.40 trillion yen (0.5%) from Zenkyoren.

    Of the total participants in defined benefit type corporate pension, 4.08 million are in the employees' pension funds, and 7.88 million in defined benefit pension plans. Although some people participate in more than one plan/fund at the same time, the total number of participants amounted to 11.97 million. About 35% of the private sector employees are estimated to be in corporate pension plans on the ground that there are 34.71 million employees' pension insurance participants as of the end of March 2013.
