Empowering Women ~For Further Advancement~

Promoting Active Participation by Women

19 September 2014

As the working-age population continues to decline and the way of securing the labor force is an urgent issue to be addressed for the Japanese economy, we need to create an environment where working mothers do not have to give up their job due to child rearing if we are to leverage the potential of motivated and skilled women to drive the growth of business, and the whole economy.

Promotion of active participation by women is also one of the pillars of the Japan Revitalization Strategy of the Japanese government, and the establishment of legal framework to achieve this is being discussed.

The Life Insurance Association of Japan, LIAJ (Chairman: Koichiro Watanabe, President of The Dai-ichi Life Insurance Company) recognized that the power of women is actually indispensable to enhance the vitality of society as a whole and to achieve the sustainable economic growth, and decided at the today's Board meeting to implement measures below, to commit as a whole industry to create an environment where women can participate more actively.

The life insurance industry, as an industry which has many women working in and has a social responsibility to promote social welfare, will lead the participation by women as well as contribute to elimination of childcare waiting lists which is a major disincentive for women to actively participate in society.

Three Pillars of the Initiative

【Bottom-up initiatives in the life insurance industry】

1. Developing the"Principles for Promotion of Active Participation by Women"

  • The LIAJ developed the "Principles for Promotion of Active Participation by Women" to share and penetrate action points necessary to create an environment where women can make the most of their abilities with member companies, and to promote member companies to take more voluntary and active measures.

2. Collecting and sharing the initiatives to promote women's active participation (planned to be published in February 2015)

  • With the aim of supporting the member companies with consideration of introducing voluntary and active measures to empower women and with establishment of an action plan, the LIAJ will visualize and share specific initiatives of member companies such as support on childcare or on career-building.

【Contributing to elimination of childcare waiting lists (a subsidy program for placing day nurseries)】

3. Launching the "Project to Support Working Parents with Small Children"

  • With the aim of contributing to elimination of childcare waiting lists, which is a nation's issue, the LIAJ will newly start to subsidize projects to increase the capacity and improve the quality of day nurseries/clubs for after school activities for children.
  • The LIAJ starts accepting application for subsidy from 19 September until 31 October, and the total subsidy will be 30 million yen. The LIAJ will publish the final list of entities eligible for subsidy in January 2015.
