Empowering Health ~For Further Advancement~

Awareness-Raising Project for Health Promotion

21 November 2014

As the social security cost is expected to increase sharply due to the falling birth rate and the aging population, there is a need to actively promote efforts for people's health promotion and disease prevention. This is also crucial to enhance sustainability of social security system by increasing social participants including elderly people.

Extending healthy life expectancy is one of the pillars of the Japan Revitalization Strategy of the Japanese government, and the specific KPI (Key Performance Indicator) targets are set therein with time deadlines. Besides, the "National Health Promotion Movement in the 21st Century (Health Japan 21)" under way advocates the importance of cooperation between the government, local governments, companies and private organizations to enhance measures focusing on preventing lifestyle-related diseases etc. (primary prevention).

The Life Insurance Association of Japan, LIAJ (Chairman: Koichiro Watanabe, President of The Dai-ichi Life Insurance Company) recognizes that extending healthy life expectancy is an essential element not only in improving people's QOL (Quality Of Life) but also in maintaining vibrant economy and society through enhancing companies' productivity and profitability and encouraging consumption etc., and decided to implement "Awareness-Raising Project for Health Promotion" described below.

Through this project, we will help people to raise their awareness on self-medication and contribute to extending healthy life expectancy, as an industry playing a role in the social security system as well as having a social mission to help improve social welfare.

Awareness-Raising Project for Health Promotion

1. Holding health promoting events in cooperation with local governments and media

  • The LIAJ will hold health promoting events with themes of exercise and diet, which are fundamental to the prevention of lifestyle-related diseases, in Urasoe, Okinawa Pref.; Fukuoka, Fukuoka Pref.; Kurashiki, Okayama Pref.; and Sendai, Miyagi Pref..
  • The LIAJ will provide people with opportunities to raise awareness of health and to learn how to manage their own health effectively through holding keynote lectures by celebrities and experts, panel discussions and walking events.

2. Providing information for spreading knowledge to prevent lifestyle-related diseases

  • The LIAJ will provide "Kenzo-kun", the LIAJ's original smart-phone health app with themes of exercise and diet (planned to be available in January, 2015) and the information booklet about preventing lifestyle-related diseases for free. The LIAJ will publicize and provide these health promotion tools through local governments' desks and the LIAJ's network throughout Japan as well as at health promoting events.

3. Collecting and sharing initiatives regarding health promotion

  • In order to support member companies in introducing and conducting voluntary and active measures in the area of health promotion, the LIAJ will visualize and share specific initiatives of member companies regarding their health promotion services and its awareness-raising activities for their employees and customers.
