Overview of defined benefit type corporate pension (as of the end of March, 2016)

The overview of corporate pension (Defined Benefit type) on the trust bank industry, the life insurance industry and Zenkyoren (the National Mutual Insurance Federation of Agriculture) as of the end of March, 2016 (preliminary) has been compiled below.

[ Summary ]

    Among the number of defined benefit type corporate pension, trustee institutes undertook 256 employees' pension funds and 13,690 defined benefit pension plans.
  • 2.
    Asset balance of defined benefit type corporate pension was 82.10 trillion yen with a decrease of 7.64 trillion yen (down 8.5% y/y).

    Of the total, employees' pension fund was 24.20 trillion yen (down 22.6% y/y), and defined benefit pension plan was 57.90 trillion yen (down 1.0% y/y).

    By industry, 65.42 trillion yen (79.7% of the total) are from the trust bank industry, 16.24 trillion yen (19.8%) are from the life insurance industry and 0.43 trillion yen (0.5%) from Zenkyoren.

    2.54 million people have participated in the employees' pension funds, and 7.95 million in defined benefit pension plans. Although some people participate in more than one plan/fund at the same time, the total number of participants in defined benefit type corporate pension amounted to 10.49 million. About 30% of the private sector employees are estimated to have participated in corporate pension plans on the ground that there are 35.99 million employees' pension insurance participants as of the end of March 2015.
